Modify Natural Gas Service

Use our 5-step checklist to upgrade or modify your existing natural gas service.

1. Find a Contractor

Meet with multiple contractors to develop project plans, requirements and cost estimates (if applicable). The contractor you select can help you prepare the documents needed in Step #2.

DTE is not responsible for customer fuel line work — the line from the meter to the inside of your building or home.

2. Prepare Documents

List your current natural gas appliances and planned additions (this can include a gas furnace, water heater, clothes dryer, generator, stove and fireplace). Your contractor can help you compile the itemized list.

Photograph your gas meter. For context, please stand approximately 15 feet away when taking the picture.

3. Submit Documents

To ensure you’re providing complete information, please call us.

We will review your information to determine the correct meter and service line sizing. This can take up to one week.

If required, an onsite visit will be scheduled to review your site and identify any changes needed to complete your service request. If so, we will schedule the visit with you and the process can take up to three weeks.

4. Review, Sign & Return

We will email a form with a quote. This will include a description of the work to be performed and any associated costs. Instructions on how to return your documents will be provided. Please sign and return. Include your payment, if applicable.

5. Schedule Service

Once we receive your signed quote and payment, if applicable, we will schedule service to occur within the following four to six weeks.

We will contact you with appointment details, which you should share with your contractor to minimize the disruption of natural gas service.
