Whether you’re looking to start natural gas service or are considering a switch to natural gas, DTE Energy is the smart choice in areas across Michigan to help meet your energy needs.
On average, natural gas is half to one third the cost of other fuel sources. You can save even more with ENERGY STAR® natural gas appliances.
Natural gas is the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel. It burns cleaner than other fuel sources, with fewer pollutants and no mercury.
Many household appliances run on natural gas, including water heaters, furnaces, clothes dryers, ranges, grills, fireplaces, patio heaters and more.
Natural gas has been a safe, cost-effective technology for lighting, cooking and heating since the 19th century.
About 85 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is produced in our country, with most of the rest coming from Canada. Both countries have abundant supplies of natural gas.
With one of the largest natural gas deposits in the U.S., Michigan delivers clean, homegrown, affordable energy to residents and businesses.
Beginning DTE Energy natural gas service is as easy as a phone call or email. Your DTE Energy representative can verify that you live in an eligible area and schedule a transfer.
If you are switching to natural gas from liquid propane, your DTE Energy representative can arrange an estimated cost for installation of a service line and meter (if needed).

Natural gas is a fossil fuel, a naturally occurring hydrocarbon compound that’s almost entirely methane (although it does contain small amounts of other gases). Natural gas accumulates in reservoirs of porous rock deep underground.
Natural gas is the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. When it’s extracted from the ground, a small amount of pollutants are removed before it enters the gas supply. As it burns, its blue flame produces water and carbon dioxide.
The United States is major producer of natural gas, helping to fuel our homes and economy. In fact, 85 percent of the natural gas used in our country is produced in the US. The rest we import from Canada through pipelines or by ship (as liquefied natural gas).
Natural gas production doesn’t disturb the surrounding area as it is extracted. Sites are quickly restored to their original state once production ends.
Finding natural gas underground is a real treasure hunt. Instead of using a pirate’s map, however, the industry uses many scientific disciplines to locate reserves accurately.
In the US alone, it’s estimated there are trillions of cubic feet of potentially recoverable natural gas resources in “unconventional sources.” This included low permeability tight sandstones, gas shales and coal bed methane formations.
Not only does this expand our energy reservoirs, it benefits everyone in other ways. For instance, our DTE Methane Resources subsidiary produces 12 million cubic foot per day of pipeline quality gas from coal bed methane formations. The harmful greenhouse gases destroyed by this project are equal to the carbon removed from the atmosphere by more than 210,000 acres of pine forests.
This page only begins to tap into the vast wealth of information about natural gas. Visit the American Gas Association to learn what more than 200 local energy companies are doing to provide natural gas nationwide.
